Field of Poppies Original Oil painting
Field of Poppies, oil on panel, custom framed to 11 x 14 inches (see photo)
I’ve painted here an innocent young Afghan girl extracting a scarlet syrup from an unripe opium pod. This substance will later be used to supply a vast portion of the world’s illicit drug use. For some reason I was fascinated by the look of the opium plant. It is beautiful and unsettling all at once. The blue-green orbs are enchanting, which is why I made the composition almost dream-like, but they also appear ominous with their bleeding cuts. They have therapeutic properties, which can deliver dramatic pain relief to those in need, but they also destroy and bring death to the many who indulge in its pleasures. Ultimately, the opium poppy reflects aspects of light and darkness which I believe inhere within all of us.
