Ahmadou Bamba was a Sufi saint who led a nonviolent resistance against French colonial occupiers.

He was headed towards exile on a French boat when he requested to pray the afternoon prayer. He was denied this so he broke through his chains and jumped into the Atlantic where he found a prayer mat floating on the water.

Here in this painting the lines between supernatural and physical are blurred. The prayer mat is floating on the water or the prayer mat is a tiny strip of land, an Island. Whatever you decide, the miracle of Ahmadou Bamba remains
