This original still life follows the realist style of “memento mori” paintings, which traditionally called attention to the inescapability of death through various symbols like the hourglass. This is my take on an Islamic version of “memento mori,”(remember that you must die). The pertinent verse here is 3:185-186 (bottom left). “Every soul shall taste death and you shall surely be paid in full your wages on the Day of Resurrection.”
